As for the third, correctly explaining the word "host": According to the Dàzhìdù lùn, "There are five kinds [of speakers]: first, spoken by the Buddha; second, spoken by holy disciples; third, spoken by gods; fourth, spoken by ṛṣis; fifth, spoken by apparitional beings." Here it is clarified that this sūtra is spoken by the Buddha; the Buddha is the teaching lord. The word "Buddha" takes "awakened" as its meaning, and there are three kinds: first, self-awakened; second, awakening others; third, fully awakened. A śrāvaka, because of attaining the cognition of the emptiness of persons, can only awaken himself. A bodhisattva, although attaining the cognition of the emptiness of phenomena, has not yet fully awakened. The buddhas are self-awakened, awaken others, and are fully perfected in awakened practice; therefore they are called "Buddha". The Buddha is the Dharma King of the three realms, the compassionate father of the four modes of birth; he emits divine radiance throughout a thousand lands and showers the Dharma rain onto the five burnings. Therefore non-Buddhists take refuge in him and heavenly māras bow their heads; his white ūrṇā is brilliant, so that hells shine and are extinguished by it; his uṣṇīṣa is lofty, so that gods and humans cannot see its summit. Difficult to comprehend and difficult to fathom, he is therefore named "Buddha". Although there are three different aspects above, the fourth [section], explaining the fulfilment of the host, is concluded in summary.
