Question: What is meant by manifesting signs? According to the Pañcavargika Vinaya: if a sick person cannot speak orally, he is permitted to manifest physical signs to grant purity and chanda. If he raises a hand, raises a finger, moves his body, shakes his head, or even raises his eyes, it is termed chanda of purity. Such is the Vinaya text. However, the person who takes the chanda must know the marks of agreement and disagreement before it can be accomplished. If he manifests signs while mentally disagreeing, although taken, it is not accomplished, and ultimately constitutes a separate saṃgha.
