First, with respect to mental intention, there are three kinds: first, pure mental-intention rites; second, face-to-face mental-intention rites; third, communal mental-intention rites. 'Pure mental intention' means that one only recites it oneself, and even if someone else is present it is still valid. Three kinds are enumerated: namely, confessing minor duṣkṛta, disclosing offenses on the upoṣadha recitation seat, and the six recollections. Second, face-to-face mental-intention refers to what was originally a face-to-face rite, but because there is no one in the boundary, the Buddha permitted mental intention. Seven kinds are provisionally listed: in the *Dharmaguptaka Vinaya*, there is varṣā; in the *Daśādhyāya-vinaya*, there are formal purity declaration (vikappana), receipt of medicine, and receipt of seven-day medicine; in the *Pañcavargika-vinaya*, there are receiving the three robes and relinquishing the three robes; in the *Samantapāsādikā*, receiving the bowl. Third, communal mental-intention refers to what is originally performed by the saṃgha, but likewise because there is no one in the boundary, mental intention is permitted: in the *Dharmaguptaka Vinaya*, upoṣadha recitation and pravāraṇā; in other traditions, receiving offerings obtained by the saṃgha and robes of the deceased.
