Next is the explanation of the karman procedure. Taking for now the upasampadā with one motion and three proclamations: the motion was already explained above, but fearing that new students have not grasped it, we will briefly reiterate it, as each has its specific purpose. The motion also has five parts: First, 'Let the venerable saṃgha listen' is the same as above, raising their ears and encouraging them to listen. Second, 'This śrāmaṇera so-and-so receives the precepts from upādhyāya so-and-so, down to: possessing the three robes and bowl; the upādhyāya is so-and-so'; this is the same as above, reiterating its background conditions and formally declaring the circumstance and matter, allowing the assembly to assess its propriety. Third, 'If the time of the saṃgha has arrived, let the saṃgha give consent and listen'; the same as above: since minds and matters are in harmony, they wish the saṃgha to jointly consent. Fourth, 'The saṃgha now confers the full precepts upon so-and-so; the upādhyāya is so-and-so'; this properly clarifies the consent, decisively determining the primary action to be taken. Fifth, 'Such is the motion'; this manifests it to the assembly so they may know. The text of this motion is broadly similar in meaning to the previous simple motion, and can be understood on that basis.
