If one chants the boundary marks from inside the courtyard, passing straight across the gate, then the inside of the threshold is outside the sīmā, which results in faults such as a separate saṃgha, breaking the varṣā, and separation from robes. For instance, when performing a rite in the monastery, if someone has finished declaring chanda, goes up to inside the door threshold, and then returns again, how is this not leaving the sīmā and entering the sīmā, which constitutes a separate saṃgha? As for breaking the varṣā: if someone relies on the sīmā for the varṣā retreat, reaches the gate before the break of dawn, and returns only after dawn is clear, how is this not breaking the varṣā? As for losing a robe: if one relies on the sīmā to demarcate a robe-safeguarding boundary, and before the break of dawn goes out without carrying the robe, and dawn breaks outside the sīmā, how is this not losing the robe? Therefore, one must thoroughly explain the faults and only then chant the marks.
