Second, explaining the chanting of the boundary marks: Today, the methods of demarcation do not exceed two: either in an araṇya, relying on mountains and water, flanking roads and following trees; or in cities and towns, following walls and courtyards, fences and trenches. Most are rectangular, sometimes with twists and turns. One must first recognise the faults and afterwards chant them avoiding those faults. This means that if earlier practitioners who had not attained understanding and subsequent masters chant the directional boundary marks, they easily admit careless descriptions. For instance, if one chants from outside the compound, saying: 'From the southeast corner straight west to the southwest corner,' and so forth for a full circuit, then at the main south gate of the monastery there will be the fault of a separate saṃgha. Because the boundary line passes straight outside the wall, the area outside the gate threshold becomes inside the boundary; if when various karmans are performed inside the monastery, there are monks outside the wall threshold who do not assemble, how could this not be a separate saṃgha? Therefore, one must know that when chanting the boundary marks, one must chant out the twists and turns so as not to cause later regret. Nor may one speak vaguely, saying 'following the twists and turns.' Twists and turns can also extend shallow or deep, far or near, and one will ultimately fail to recognise the precise limits.
