《涅槃》中，種種示相已，云：於毀法者，與七羯磨；為欲示諸行惡行者有果報故。當知如來，即是施惡眾生無恐畏者。以現在治罰，息將來大怖故。若善比丘置不訶責，當知是人佛法中怨；若能驅遣舉處治罰，是我弟子真聲聞也。
In the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, after showing various marks, it says: 'Toward those who destroy the Dharma, apply the seven karmans; this is in order to show those who commit evil deeds that there is retribution. One should know that the Tathāgata is indeed one who bestows fearlessness upon evil sentient beings. Because through punishment in the present, he puts an end to great dread in the future. If good bhikṣus set them aside and do not reproach them, one should know that these persons are enemies within the Buddha-Dharma; if they can expel, accuse, and punish them, they are my disciples, true śrāvakas.'
