Second, explaining the deprivation of activities. After performing the procedure for him, one announces to him, saying: 'We have already performed the reprimand [karman] for you; now thirty-five matters are revoked from you, which you may not perform for the rest of your life. If you can certainly comply without any disobedience, the saṃgha will evaluate and deal with it.' What are the thirty-five? There are seven different sets. The first five deprive him of his retinue: 1. He must not confer full ordination on others; 2. He must not accept others to depend on him; 3. He must not keep a śrāmaṇera; 4. He must not accept an appointment by the saṃgha to instruct bhikṣuṇīs; 5. Even if appointed by the saṃgha, he must not go. The second five deprive him of his wisdom and capability: 1. He must not recite the precepts; 2. If questions and answers on the meaning of the Vinaya are exchanged in the saṃgha, he must not answer; 3. If appointed by the saṃgha to perform a karman, he must not perform it; 4. If the saṃgha selects and gathers the wise to deliberate on communal affairs together, he is not included among them; 5. If appointed by the saṃgha to serve as a messenger, he must not do so. The third five restrict his compliance: 1. He may not enter a village too early; 2. He may not return late in the evening; 3. He must associate with [worthy] bhikṣus; 4. He must not draw close to laypeople or tīrthikas; 5. He must comply with the instructions of the bhikṣus and must not speak differently. The fourth five restrict his continuing subsequent offenses: 1. He must not commit this offense again, nor must he commit any other offenses (meaning that for a saṃghāvaśeṣa a reprimand is performed, while 'other' refers to the lower classes of offenses); 2. Offenses that are similar or arise from this (similar means an offense of the same class; arising from this means being reprimanded for physical contact and then sitting secluded with a woman); 3. Offenses even graver than this (meaning having committed a pāyattika and being disciplined, then going on to commit a saṃghāvaśeṣa, etc.); 4. He must not resent the karman; 5. He must not scold the people who performed the karman. The fifth five deprive him of being waited upon: 1. If a virtuous bhikṣu spreads a seat to make an offering to him, he must not accept it; 2. He must not accept another's washing of his feet; 3. He must not accept another's setting out foot-washing items for him; 4. He must not accept another's wiping of his leather sandals; 5. He must not accept another's rubbing and massaging of his body. The sixth five restrict him from receiving respect: 1. He must not receive a virtuous bhikṣu's bowing, placing the palms together, inquiring after his health, welcoming, carrying robes and bowls, and so forth. The seventh five deprive him of bearing witness or adjudicating other matters: 1. He must not bring up a virtuous bhikṣu to perform a formal reminder or elicitation of confession; 2. He must not testify in another's affairs; 3. He must not suspend an upoṣadha; 4. He must not suspend a pravāraṇā; 5. He must not dispute with virtuous bhikṣus.
