Second, banishment. This refers to expounding the four matters perversely in front of laypeople, as detailed in the Vinaya text; or like corrupting households with bad conduct in the 'Subsequent Precepts'. Subverting and disrupting the Buddha's Dharma, defiling the pure and good minds of other laypeople, taking what is wrong to be right. Therefore, he must be dispatched out of his original dwelling and brought under discipline to subdue him, so that laypeople may recognize wrongs, understand what is correct, and have no further doubts. This transgression is committed by many people and especially must be prohibited. Regarding the disciplinary procedure, compliance, and words of revocation, they are roughly the same as the method above. However, in the initial banishment, after citing his fault, making him leave this dwelling is what is different. The Vinaya root text contains it in detail. If he complies and requests revocation, he must not come unannounced; he should remain outside the boundary and send a messenger to request it. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: He must not discuss or converse with the bhikṣus. If he has inquiries or requests, refer them to his original preceptor.
