Regarding the persons involved: Whenever executing legal acts, the primary importance lies in the leaders. The community head and senior elders must first establish discipline: as soon as an unlawful act is seen, it must be rectified immediately; they must not sit in silence, thereby incurring fault and blame. In the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, various types of elders are described, each with their own instructions, as detailed in that text. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: "There are three kinds of insane persons: first, when the saṃgha holds the upoṣadha recitation, they sometimes come and sometimes do not; second, they consistently do not remember and do not come; third, they remember and come. The first kind must be granted a karman [for insanity], while the latter two do not need it." The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: "If the legal act has not yet been performed, one may not hold the upoṣadha recitation apart from this person; once the act is performed, one may hold it apart from him." The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: "If he cannot be found, perform the karman from a distance." In the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya: "Grant it with a jñaptidvitīya-karman; if the madness ceases, have him come and request rehabilitation, which is revoked with a jñaptidvitīya-karman; if it flares up again, grant the legal act as before; if the madness ceases and he does not come, there is no fault, because he previously obtained the legal act; also, one should not feign madness, for imposing the legal act on such a person is invalid." The karman is performed according to the Vinaya.
