十二畜生難。亦謂變為人形而來者。律中，龍變形來受，佛言：畜生者，於我法中，無所長益。此上二趣，若依本形，是人通識；恐變而來，故須問之。脫有高達俗士來受戒，時語云：「汝非畜生不？」若聞此言，一何可怪，應方便轉問，如下所陳。

Twelfth is the impediment of animals. This also refers to those who transform into human form and come. In the Vinaya, a nāga transformed its shape and came to receive [the precepts]; the Buddha said: 'Animals have no benefit or growth in my Dharma.' As for the above two destinies, if they appear in their original form, humans all recognize them; fearing that they might come transformed, one must ask them. If an eminent lay gentleman comes to receive the precepts and one tells him at that time, 'Are you not an animal?' how startling it would be if he heard such words! One should skillfully rephrase the question, as set forth below.
