In the first [part], there are eight kinds of persons said to be permitted not to rely on another. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya has six kinds: 1. one who delights in seclusion; 2. one who guards a dwelling place; 3. one who is sick; 4. one who tends the sick; 5. one who has completed five years [since upasampadā] or more, whose conduct and virtue are perfected; 6. one who possesses wisdom and conduct himself, and in whose dwelling place there is no one superior to him. 7. In times of famine when there is no food, the Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: 'If one fears dying of hunger, one should dwell in a place where one sees the upādhyāya every day; if one fears that is impossible, then every five days, every fifteen days, or at a distance of two and a half yojanas, or until the time of pravāraṇā, in each case according to circumstances, as stated above, one comes to see the upādhyāya.' 8. Dwelling where one's practice of the Way is congenial, the Pañcavargika-vinaya states: 'If the bhikṣus each diligently cultivate the Way and there is no one to provide reliance, they should inwardly give rise to reliance toward a senior elder of great virtue in the assembly, and dwell revering him according to the rule of a master.'
