Third, the method of requiting kindness. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: In the early morning, enter the room, remove the chamber pot, announce that the time has arrived, and so forth. One should inquire after the upādhyāya's well-being three times daily—in the morning, at midday, and in the evening—and undertake two kinds of tasks, never excusing oneself on account of toil and hardship. The extensive provisions span more than four sheets of text, which must be separately copied and followed. First, this is to subdue one's own arrogance; second, it is to requite kindness and offer support; third, it is to protect the Dharma and sustain it, so that the True Dharma abides for a long time. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: When the disciple rises in the morning, he first steps into the upādhyāya's room with his right foot, touches his head to the ground in reverence to his feet, and asks whether he slept in peace. The rest is the same as the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: If bathing the upādhyāya, first wash the feet, next the thighs, and up to the chest and back. If he is ill, first use the upādhyāya's own belongings; if he has none, use one's own; or seek them from others. Three times a day, instruct the disciple, saying: "Do not associate with bad spiritual friends or keep company with wicked persons." If a disciple falls ill, even though someone is caring for him, [the master] must still go to see him three times daily and tell the caregiver: "Do not grow weary or resentful; this is praised by the Buddha." The Saṃyuktāgama states: If there is a monk who is not deceitful, illusory, or false, and does not cheat; who has faith, shame, remorse, diligence, and right mindfulness, with a mind bent on renunciation; who deeply reveres the vinaya precepts and cares for the ascetic conduct; whose aspiration values nirvāṇa and who has gone forth for the sake of the Dharma—such a monk should be respectfully instructed. This is because he can cultivate pure conduct (brahmacarya) and establish himself.
