1.47

且略引諸條，薄知方詣。總撮包舉者，莫非拯接凡庸，心懷泥曰而興教矣！故文云：世尊何故制增戒學？為調三毒故！云何為學？為求四果故！

Now I briefly cite various articles so that the direction may be slightly understood. What is comprehensively gathered and encompassed is nothing other than rescuing ordinary beings; it was with minds cherishing nirvāṇa that the teaching arose! Therefore the text states: "Why did the Bhagavat formulate the training in higher morality? To regulate the three poisons! What is the training? To seek the four fruits!"
