Fourth, mutual substitution: That is, having taken leave of seven days for the Buddha, and having already used three days, if there are further Dharma affairs, one then applies the remainder to them; this is not permitted. If there were originally that circumstance, why would one fail to use it generally? In the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, announcing the use of the remaining nights refers to when the same single matter is not yet completed and one announces the use of the remaining nights; it does not refer to different matters. If originally taken entirely because of matters of the Three Jewels, using them interchangeably as appropriate is entirely permissible, because both have the legal basis. If a matter of the Three Jewels arises later and was not the former circumstance, matters of the Three Jewels and other miscellaneous circumstances are not permitted, because originally there was no intention to take leave for them. Furthermore, if one takes leave for days to receive donated goods for the Zhang family, and after receiving the donation, one is detained to administer precepts, one should also not stay, because there is no legal basis; if it were a general circumstance for a single household, according to the intention it should be permissible. Question: May a monk within this sīmā take leave for days for the Three Jewels or a sick person in another place? Answer: It generates even more goodness, so it is permitted. Question: If invited in the regular turn of the saṃgha, may one take leave for days? Answer: The Vinaya establishes both kinds of invitations, so general leave may also be taken. Question: If one receives an invitation to another's house, may one take leave for days? Answer: If by regular turn of the saṃgha, it should be permitted; an individual invitation is not allowable, because it was not the donor's original intention.
