In the first, it requires five monks or more to be able to make a motion appointing [the receiver of] pravāraṇā. One should strike the bell to assemble the saṃgha, each spreading a mat on the ground and sitting, because in mutually pointing out faults, occupying beds would allow arrogant demeanor to continue unbroken. The Vinaya says: "One must not be on a seat, nor on the bare ground; one should hold pravāraṇā apart from the seats." The Pañcavargika-vinaya says: "Plaster the ground well, spread grass seats, and then hold pravāraṇā." All bare the right shoulder, place the right knee on the ground, and join the palms. First, distribute water, bathe the counting sticks in fragrant juice, call out the tally, and make the announcements, largely identical to the upoṣadha recitation, only changing the words of upoṣadha recitation to those of pravāraṇā. Even the śrāmaṇeras and others must also assemble in the hall, because the principle of dealing with and pointing out [faults] is the same; only after waiting for the announcement to dismiss them are they permitted to leave. They perform the pravāraṇā rite in a separate place, as explained in the specific rites.
