The third precept on speaking coarse words to a woman. Seven conditions constitute an offense: 1. A human female; 2. The perception of her as a human female; 3. Having a lustful mind; 4. Coarse words; 5. The perception of them as coarse words; 6. Clear and intelligible articulation; 7. The other person understands. The Vinayavibhāṣā states: If a bhikṣu is naturally fond of coarse words, it is a sthūlātyaya. In the Vinaya, 'human female' requires that she has understanding and comprehends words of lustful desire. 'Coarse and evil words' refer to what is not of the brahma-conduct. It is not necessarily that the sound itself is coarse or ugly to be called 'coarse and evil'; it may not avoid touching upon good matters, yet its intent expresses sexual desire. Therefore the Vinaya states: 'If he speaks other words as well.' For example, the Vinaya recounts: because a woman wearing red clothes had digested ghee and her bodily form was exposed, [a bhikṣu] said, 'Is the digested ghee good or not?' If the woman comprehends the sentiment, the Vinaya establishes a saṃghāvaśeṣa. If she does not understand, as in the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: a bhikṣu saw a woman wearing newly dyed clothes with her form exposed; the bhikṣu said, 'This bright red is good,' and the woman said, 'It is just because it was newly dyed.' The bhikṣu became doubtful and reported it to the Buddha. The Buddha had a bhikṣu ask the woman, and the woman answered fully as before. The Buddha said: 'Both the literal sense and underlying intent were understood; it is a saṃghāvaśeṣa.' The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: If she understands the words but not the meaning, it is a sthūlātyaya. This discusses only speaking coarse words to a woman with a lustful mind; if following the Pañcavargika-vinaya, if they mutually speak coarse words to each other, an offense is incurred. The subsequent precept on praising oneself is also like this. In the Vinaya, under non-offenses: speaking to a woman on the contemplation of impurity and disgusting discharges, the nine sores, nine orifices, nine entrances, nine leakages, or nine streams, and that woman takes it as speaking coarse words; or when expounding the vinaya, the topic comes to this in sequence; or expounding sutras or receiving sutras, or two people receiving together, or the other asking and this one answering, or chanting together, or speaking mistakenly—as long as there is no lustful mind, in all cases there is no offense.
