Under the first undetermined rule, it is incurred through four conditions: first, being in a secluded place; second, with a woman; third, with no third person present; and fourth, an offense is incurred according to what is done. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: '"Woman" means a human female endowed with discernment whose life has not ended. "Alone" means one bhikṣu and one woman. "In a secluded place" is of two kinds: first, secluded from view, such as in dust, fog, or darkness where they cannot see each other; second, secluded from hearing, down to a place where ordinary speech cannot be heard. "Covered place" means covered above. "Screened place" means trees, walls, fences, robes, or other screens. "Place suitable for sexual intercourse" means a place roomy enough to carry out intercourse.' The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'Whether mother, daughter, sister, relative, non-relative, elderly, young, lay, or monastic, all are "women." Even if another person is present, if sleeping, insane, or an infant, it is entirely called "alone."' The Samantapāsādikā states: '"Secluded from sight and hearing" refers to the blind, deaf, sleeping persons, and multiple women.' The conditions above all constitute grounds for offense, as detailed in the previous section.
