Precept 8: Encouraging an increase in the price of a robe. Regarding the offense, it is constituted by six conditions: First, an unrelated layperson who intends to set a price. Second, the period of giving is limited. Third, knowing that the gift is limited. Fourth, begrudging it as too little and encouraging an increase. Fifth, the other increases the price or the yarn for him. Sixth, receiving it immediately constitutes the offense. In the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya, when a householder gives cloth for a robe, [the monk] begrudges it as too little and seeks more, down to an increase of one-sixteenth of a coin, or an increase in yarn down to a single thread. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: There are three [types of] niḥsargika-pāyattika for encouraging an increase in color, size, or price. Under the non-offenses in the Vinaya: having previously received an unrestricted invitation and going to ask; being content, yet asking for less than what was requested; if one seeks it from relatives, seeks it from monastics, has already sought it for another, another seeks it for oneself, or one obtains it without asking, there is no offense. The rest is as in the Commentary.
