Eighth, the correct method for formal receipt of food. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya [states]: There are five kinds of receipt: hand giving and hand receiving; hand giving and receiving with a held object; giving with a held object and hand receiving; if giving with a held object and receiving with a held object; and if tossing an object from afar, as described above. There are another five kinds: giving with the body, robe, bent elbow, or a vessel, which are in turn received by the above four [methods]; and if there is a reason, placing it on the ground to give (saying "Received, received!" as above). The Daśādhyāya-vinaya [states]: A kappiyakāraka does not understand how to distribute food, so half is in the bowl and half discarded on the ground. If it falls onto grass that has been formally received, it should be eaten; if it gets dirt on it, blow it off and eat it; if there is much dirt, wash it with water and eat it. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya [states]: When it descends one is aware, but when it falls into the bowl one is not aware; second, when it first descends one is not aware, but when it falls one is aware. Both of these lack proper īryāpatha, but are termed formal receipt of food. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya [states]: When distributing food, if the kappiyakāraka disdains the bhikṣu and intentionally touches the bhikṣu's hand, it should not be received; if he does not disdain [him], it is permissible.
