The four prātideśanīyas. The first precept is named accepting food from an unrelated bhikṣuṇī while in a layperson's house. It involves five conditions: first, a layperson's residence; second, an unrelated bhikṣuṇī; third, lacking an excuse; fourth, taking the food with one's own hand; fifth, a transgression is incurred with each swallow. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: 'Food' refers to both primary and secondary [foods]; if one is unill and takes it oneself, a transgression is incurred with every swallow. The text does not distinguish between one's own food or another's food, applying to both in accordance with the circumstances. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: 'It is an offense [if done] in an alleyway, but not an offense within the house,' as such was the origin of the rule. Under the Vinaya, one does not commit an offense if: one receives food from a related bhikṣuṇī, if one is ill, if she places it on the ground and gives it, if she has another person hand it over, if it is given in a monastic saṃghārāma, if it is outside the village, or if it is inside a nunnery—in all such cases it is permissible.
