2.373

先約心辨。止持有二。一無惡來污明止持。行前三心，得有止持（謂識、想、受等。此三非業；流入行心，方成別因。故分二也）。由本有戒體光潔，無違名持。受體是記，三心無記也。

First, distinguishing with reference to the mind. Observance by abstention has two aspects: First, clarifying observance by abstention through having no evil come to defile. In the three minds preceding volition (namely consciousness, ideation, feeling, and so forth—these three are not karma; only when flowing into the mind of volition do they become specific causes; hence two are distinguished), because the original precept essence is radiant and pure, being without violation is called observance. The received essence is determinate, while the three minds are indeterminate.
