First, with reference to the mind, it extends to gradual and sudden. If the mind intends to universally sever evil intentions, it is called the suddenness of the mind of observance by abstention; if one wishes to commit all evils together, it is called the suddenness of the mind of transgression by action; if one cultivates all wholesome deeds together, it is called the suddenness of the mind of observance by action; if one ceases cultivation, it is called the suddenness of the mind of transgression by abstention. As for the gradualness of the mind, it can be known by category. There is nothing that does not conflict with or conform to the received essence; hence observance and transgression are divided in two.
