一約法而言。四種不同：一威儀戒，二護根戒，三定共戒，四道共戒。初一外凡假名僧戒；中二內凡和合僧戒；後一聖人真實僧戒。德行優劣，三品殊異；持威儀弱，護根持勝，以制心故，乃至道共為勝。

First, speaking in terms of teaching. There are four differences: first, precepts of īryāpatha; second, precepts of guarding the faculties; third, precepts concurrent with dhyāna; fourth, precepts concurrent with the path. The first is the nominal saṃgha precepts of outer ordinary beings; the middle two are the harmonious saṃgha precepts of inner ordinary beings; the last is the true saṃgha precepts of noble persons. The superiority and inferiority of their virtuous practice differ across three grades: observance of īryāpatha is weak, observance of guarding the faculties is superior because of restraining the mind, and up to that concurrent with the path being the most superior.
