Second, preliminary expedients that tend toward the result. Carrying out and acting upon an intended object must have three periods of time. Therefore, the Great Sage formulated [the precepts] according to the time, intending that the wise resolve their wills and not commit them. This has been briefly cited above. What is the prior preliminary expedient? Discussing the various categories in general, in the Vinayavibhāṣā, the first and second classes of offenses have three preliminary expedients. The third and fourth classes establish two preliminary expedients. In the fifth class, merely an intention arising in body and speech has only the primary [offense], without preliminary expedients; yet if there is an intention that moves body and speech, there are also remote and proximate preliminary expedients. In the Vinaya, it only clarifies that what is accomplished is a pārājika, and what is unaccomplished is a sthūlātyaya, without distinguishing light and heavy. This has been extensively clarified at the beginning of the scroll.
