Fourth: regarding numbers. The method of object ideation has either four or five [clauses]; fearing that people are not yet practiced, I shall temporarily set out the aspects and list them based on the precept against killing. The first clause: human, thinking it is a human (mind and object correspond). Second: human, doubting it is a non-human (object is fixed, mind doubts). Third: human, thinking it is a non-human (object is fixed, mind errs). Fourth: non-human, thinking it is a human (object errs, mind is fixed). Fifth: non-human, doubting it is a human (object errs, mind shifts; both conditions are lacking). The five clauses are like this. The reason for the variation in number is solely due to the third, human thinking it is a non-human; because this single one is indeterminate, there are either four or five.
