Second, whether the procedure is valid when one forgets and then sees the original item. When relinquishing robes, there is much forgetfulness, which readily leads to contagion. If after finishing the relinquishment of robes, or after the robes have been returned and the declaration of purification is completed, one suddenly sees the forgotten item: the previous two procedures of relinquishment and declaration of purification both remain valid; as for what was forgotten later, one brings it forward again for niḥsargika-pāyattika. If before the returned property has been declared one sees the forgotten item, they immediately infect each other and all together enter the offense of keeping extra items; as for the previously relinquished property, even if it was begged cloth or traded goods, the circumstances of its relinquishment and return are the same as newly acquired items, so one should declare purification according to the Dharma; however, because of the contagion with the forgotten extra item, it cannot be declared, and one must again perform relinquishment as an extra item. If one says that what was forgotten is given to another, this is also invalid; because the thought of it belonging to oneself arose earlier, and only later out of fear of contagion did one relinquish it, this is not a pure gift, and the Buddha does not permit it. The text states: 'Only after it has been relinquished may it be dispatched.' If the forgotten item is from trade or other relinquishments, there is not the slightest contagion. What is called 'contagion' universally applies and infects among the three precepts of ten days, one month, and exceeding the emergency gift. Because this matter is troublesome, before relinquishing the property and robes, if one generates in advance the thought of relinquishing, resolving that it belongs to the Three Jewels or to a specific person, it is valid. If after relinquishing one takes it back again, that is a grave theft and does not fall under this precept; one must know this.
