Second, explaining the rite of confession for the ninety simple pāyattika [offenses]. One should, according to whether one has committed many or few, make a comprehensive or individual confession; the method is the same as before. Fearing that later students will not know it, I set out the rank once again. For now, taking false speech as an example, for whatever other offenses one has committed, one enters them by their names. If there are attendant offenses, one confesses them at the beginning of the root [offense] as before; or [they may have] nine grades, six grades, four grades, three grades, or two grades, depending on knowing whether they are present or not. Like an oversized sitting mat or newly-colored three robes, all involve wearing and using them, so one must first repent them, all as shown before. Second, the confession rite proper. First, one invites a pure bhikṣu who knows the vinaya and is capable of releasing offenses, and together in an empty, quiet place, or before an image of the Buddha, with full decorum invites him. The method of invitation is not different from above. Third, after inviting, he should distinguish for him the three kinds of offense names, varieties, and characteristics, and also explain for him the two characteristics of observance and breach, causing him to produce fear. After having fully confessed as above, one then repents the root method, reciting: "May the Venerable One attend! I, bhikṣu so-and-so, have committed one pāyattika offense of intentional false speech. Now I disclose and confess it to the Venerable One." The rest is as explained before. The Samantapāsādikā says: If when alive someone maliciously reviled [another], and that person has entered nirvāṇa, when the reviler seeks to repent, he should make confession at the place of nirvāṇa; after confessing, the gate to the heavenly realms will not be closed.
