Next, explaining inadvertent action. First, setting forth its characteristics. This means that the mind is not right in mindfulness, and encountering circumstances gives rise to wrong; externally exceeding decorum, in principle one must reform and confess. For example, when putting on the three robes, one must look back and examine them, ensuring all appearances are tidy, before setting out on the road; frivolous laughter, false speech, and all unprincipled appearances all arise because one did not restrain mindfulness beforehand, hence giving rise to these faults. The Vinaya says: The Buddha instituted restraining decorum: whether a bhikṣu enters or exits, bends or stretches, looks down or looks up, carries robes and bowl, wears clothes, eats food, takes medicine, passes feces or urine, sleeps, slumbers, or awakens, comes or goes, sits or lies down, speaks or stays silent, he should always be single-minded like this. If one violates this rule, one incurs the offense fully. Next, explaining the procedure. First repenting attendant offenses, then clarifying the root. One should, with full decorum, go to a Buddha shrine, and having paid respect, kneel on the right knee, join the palms, and say: "I, bhikṣu so-and-so, have committed duṣkṛta offenses of inadvertently wearing the uttarāsaṅga untidily, not recollecting the number. Now I disclose and confess them, and dare not do it again (one recitation)." All the rest follow this.
