Fourth, compounding them together: The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: When the four medicines are compounded together, one takes them according to the dominant one. If a proper-time medicine or a lifetime medicine assists in completing a seven-day medicine, it is taken as a seven-day [medicine]; because the potency of the seven-day medicine is greater, and also because it is assisted to completion; just as when cooking meat with butter, this butter-and-meat juice may be taken as a seven-day [medicine]. If a proper-time medicine or a seven-day medicine assists in completing a lifetime medicine, it is taken as a lifetime [medicine]; as when pills are made of butter and milk mixed with tingli seeds; or as when aconite, monkshood, and other poisonous medicines are used to soak beans or wheat, they are called lifetime medicines. If a lifetime or seven-day [medicine] assists in completing a proper-time medicine, it is taken within the proper time; as in flour foods using butter, oil, ginger, pepper, and the like. If their portions are equal and their potencies similar, it is designated according to the first single name of the medicine, and the rest are termed its medicinal parts; as with quartz, stalactite, astragalus, and atractylodes, in pills, powders, decoctions, ointments, syrups, and the like, all are to be understood and used by analogy.
