The second is purity by dānapati: There are three aspects: First, the food utensils are another's property. The Vinaya states: 'From this day forth, it must be treated as the food of a dānapati; let a kappiyakāraka store and lift it, and [monks] must not receive it themselves; if there is any need, request and take it at will.' Second, the place is another's property. Hence it is said: 'If a saṃghārāma is being built for the saṃgha but has not yet been donated to the saṃgha, even though food is stored inside, it is not called an offense.' Third, both the food and the place are [another's]. That is, the place belongs to another and the food utensils belong to another, not pertaining to the saṃgha's use. These three are called purity by another's property; they must be genuine and not false. Nowadays many rely on pretenses, deceiving and cheating themselves; this is non-Dharmic and incurs an offense. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: King Bimbisāra offered a gruel field to the saṃgha, and monks went up to the threshing floor. The Buddha said: 'Before it has been apportioned, you should go; once it has been apportioned, you should not go; doing so incurs a duṣkṛta.' When the king passed away, the monks saw there was no dānapati and considered it an offense of overnight cooking. The Buddha said: 'Ajātaśatru has taken his place, so it is not called an offense.' (By this analogy, all others are offenses.) The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states: A brāhmaṇa brought gruel and rice to offer to the Buddha and the saṃgha; because it was prepared in the dwelling place of the saṃgha, the Buddha said, 'Stored overnight inside, cooked inside; I do not permit eating it.' (Thus we know that if it belongs to the saṃgha, it falls under the saṃgha's rules and is not purity by dānapati.)
