Fourth is demarcating by a motion and one announcement (jñaptidvitīya-karman). This refers to cases where the monastic compound's boundaries encircle it entirely, and bhikṣus dwelling within would incur the fault of keeping overnight and cooking food. Regardless of whether they have dwelt there for a long or short time, one demarcates it according to the location, excluding the bhikṣus. The Vinayamātṛkā states: 'If within the great sīmā there is no pure kitchen, none of the food kept overnight may be eaten, down to medicinal herbs as well.' The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: 'Because bhikṣus starved to death, it was permitted to demarcate [a pure site] in a quiet corner room along the border within the saṃghārāma.' (It must be upon a ritual sīmā, unlike the designation method.) The Pañcavargika Vinaya states: 'If the bhikṣus wish to perform a karman to demarcate a single room, a single corner, half a room, half a corner, the central courtyard, or entirely demarcate the interior of the monastery as a pure site, all are permitted.' If it is demarcated entirely, the karman states: 'In this dwelling place we dwell together and perform upoṣadha together; the saṃgha now demarcates a pure site, excluding such-and-such a place' (meaning the rooms and buildings where the saṃgha dwells, walks about, and so forth. By this standard, fruits and vegetables throughout the sīmā are without fault; when dawn breaks, one must be under a shelter). It also states: 'It must be established based on the ground, not upon raised buildings.' The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'Whether under a single roof with separate partitions, with continuous partitions under separate roofs, with continuous roofs and continuous partitions, or with separate roofs and separate partitions; on one side, two sides, or three sides; or demarcating pure areas on both sides of a dividing path while leaving the middle impure—all such arrangements are permissible.' Following this, in the text of the ritual karman one must explicitly and precisely specify the boundaries. When the demarcation is completed, a sign must be displayed in a conspicuous place so that both hosts and guests understand it. (In the Vinaya, guests ask: 'Which is the pure ground? Which is the impure ground?')
