Second, explaining places and persons. If having a kappiyakāraka perform purification, there are four propositions: First, both the person and the fruit are in pure ground: purification succeeds, which is very good. Second, both the person and the fruit are in impure ground: purification succeeds, but it is not proper [for monks] to eat it (because it has ripened within; the other four assemblies may eat it). The other two propositions come from the Daśādhyāya-vinaya; thus the text says: 'If the fruit is in impure ground, and the purifier in pure ground performs purification with fire or a knife, purification succeeds, but it may not be eaten. If the fruit is in pure ground, and the purifier performs purification in impure ground, it is termed pure and may be eaten.'
