The Dharmaguptaka allows sixteen cane vessels: that is, a large cauldron, a cauldron lid, a large basin, and a ladle; a small cauldron, a cauldron lid, a small basin, and a ladle; a wash bottle, a bottle lid, a basin, and a ladle; a water bottle, a bottle lid, a basin, and a ladle; thus there are two cauldrons, four basins, two bottles, four lids, and four ladles. Furthermore, for ironworkers who enter homelessness and wish to make bowls, the Buddha permitted them to make them; they may keep the needed furnace, bellows, axe, blower bag, file, and lathe tools; they should make bags to contain them and hang them on pegs. It also permits keeping the gear and utensils for firing bowls. When sewing robes, if one requires an ink line, red ochre, white chalk, orpiment, snapping line, ruler, threads, gold-needles, knives, patching materials, and the like, all are permitted; one should make a bag to hold them; if troubled by needles falling and getting lost, make a needle felt and a tube to stopper them; if mending bowls requires drills and sheet metal, both are permitted. An araṇya bhikṣu is permitted to kindle fire by fire-drilling arts; fire mother, fire child, drills, and the like are all permitted. If one obtains seven-day medicine, it should be placed in a kaṇḍaka, a small bowl, a medium bowl, or a large bowl, without performing pure-bestowal (though in principle a large bowl requires it); they are to be hung on pegs or dragon-tooth pegs. One must not keep leather or wooden bowls. The Chuyao lüyi says: "A kaṇḍaka is an auxiliary eating vessel." The Vinaya says: "A kaṇḍaka is a shallow iron bowl."
