《四分》：老病不堪步涉，聽作步挽車，若輦、若乘；除牸牛、䮬馬。若得輦，聽畜；須輦轅及皮繩、若枕橙，並得。應使寺民、優婆塞、沙彌擔牽。若得車亦爾。應除織皮繩、髮繩。

The Dharmaguptaka states: "If through age or illness one cannot travel on foot, [the Buddha] permitted making a hand-pulled cart, a palanquin, or a carriage; excluding cows and mares. If one obtains a palanquin, one is permitted to keep it; if one needs palanquin shafts, leather cords, or headrests and footstools, they are all permitted. One should employ monastery serfs, upāsakas, or śrāmaṇeras to pull and carry them. If one obtains a cart, it is likewise. One should exclude woven leather ropes and hair ropes."
