The Daśādhyāya states: "A yak-tail whisk is accepted for the purpose of dusting the Buddha stūpa." The Mahāsāṃghika states: "From now on, it is permitted to hold string whisks, torn cotton cloth, bark, and the like; except for yak tails, horse tails, and gold or silver handles, which must not be held at all; if white, dye and spoil it before using; it must not be held in the manner of a courtesan making coquettish poses—this is called the whisk rule." The Wubai wen says: "When expounding the Dharma among the saṃgha, on a high seat, if not ill, one must not lean on an armrest. Holding a chowrie commits a pāyattika; those not made of animal hair are permitted." The Dharmaguptaka states: "If one obtains a tail whisk, one is permitted to keep it; one must not keep woven hair whisks (as they kill many tiny insects, they must not be kept)."
