First, rag robes: The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: "Renounce robes donated by dānapatis and wear rag robes." The Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā states: "If a bhikṣu wishes to fully practice and maintain the category of precepts, he should wear two kinds of robes: namely, those given by kulapatis, and those obtained from rags." This is because there are ten benefits: (1) modesty and shame; (2) shielding against cold, heat, and venomous insects; (3) manifesting the formal deportment of a śramaṇa; (4) all devas and humans, seeing the Dharma robe, revere it like a stūpa; (5) one who has a mind of renunciation dyes the robes, not out of coveting beauty; (6) it accords with quiescent cessation, not with blazing afflictions; (7) because one wears the Dharma robe, any wrongdoing is easily seen; (8) one does not need other things for adornment; (9) it accords with the eightfold noble path; (10) [one resolves,] 'I shall vigorously practice the path, and not let a defiled mind arise even for an instant.' The Ratnarāśi-sūtra states: "When the śrāmaṇera Cunda washed his rag robes, the devas took the water to wash their own bodies."
