Fifth, eating in one sitting: The treatise states: "Not eating again after leaving the place where one first accepted food has ten benefits: (1) there is no weariness and suffering of seeking a second meal; (2) what is received is light and minimal; (3) there is no weariness and suffering in what is utilized; (4) there is no weariness and suffering prior to the meal; (5) one enters the subtle practice of the food rules; (6) one eats only after the food is digested; (7) there are few impediments and troubles; (8) there is little illness; (9) the body is light and agile; (10) the body is joyful and at ease." The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: "Although some people eat only one meal, out of a greedy mind they gorge excessively, so that their belly swells and breath is obstructed, impeding their practice of the path; therefore, they undertake to eat a measured amount." The Sanqian wei yi states: "One must not eat repeatedly; one should eat once; for [frequent eating] increases the fetters of lust, anger, and delusion, making one no different from laypeople."
