The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'The senior monk should eat slowly; he must not finish quickly and stand watching, while the young ones eat hurriedly and are not filled; they should look to one another. They should even wait until water is offered, and only after the verse of blessing is recited may they stop.' It also states: 'When the kulapati finishes feeding the saṃgha, the leftover foodstuffs should reasonably be given to the neighboring houses.'
