The Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: If a bhikṣu expounds the Dharma for the sake of material gain, all of his followers will also imitate this teacher; with such a person acting thus, he ruins his own assembly. There are three kinds of assemblies: First, the mixed saṃgha of precept-breakers: though they observe the prohibitions, for the sake of material gain they sit, rise, walk, and act together with precept-breakers, sharing their deeds. Second, the foolish saṃgha: dwelling in an āraṇya, their faculties are dull; with few desires they beg for food; on the days of pravāraṇā and upoṣadha recitation, they instruct their own disciples in pure repentance, but seeing those who are not their disciples commit many transgressions of the prohibitions, they cannot instruct them to repent purely, yet they proceed to recite the precepts and hold pravāraṇā together with them. What is the pure saṃgha? Unstained by material gain, they understand the characteristics of precepts well. What is knowing the heavy [precepts]? Such as the four heavy prohibitions, which one who has gone forth does not commit; whoever commits them is no longer a śramaṇa or a son of the Śākya clan. What is knowing the light [precepts]? Ceasing upon the third admonition, and so forth. Those not confirmed by the Vinaya: if anyone praises and expounds the receipt and use of impure objects, one must not dwell together with them. Those who are confirmed by the Vinaya: if they train in the Vinaya and precepts, do not associate with precept-breakers, rejoice upon seeing those who comply with the Vinaya, and can explain skillfully, they are called Vinaya masters who skillfully understand a single word. If, for the sake of benefiting sentient beings, one goes to an improper place, if he is a śrāvaka, he should not do so.
