《雜含》云：一法師得受六十新學比丘，教誡說法。佛告比丘：有問命終者，徒勞耳！非如來所樂答者。夫生有死，何足為怪！當思十二緣行，疾得度此。《僧祇》：若有違佛語者，比丘犯罪，白衣知如之何。

The Saṃyuktāgama states: A single Dharma master may accept sixty newly trained bhikṣus to instruct and expound the Dharma to them. The Buddha addressed the bhikṣus: 'For someone to inquire about the deceased is merely wasted effort! It is not what the Tathāgata delights in answering. Since there is birth, there must be death—what is there to find strange? One should contemplate the practice of the twelve links of dependent origination and quickly attain deliverance from this.' The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If anyone violates the Buddha's words, the bhikṣu commits an offense; how could a layperson know of this?
