The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If entering a royal assembly, one must not praise or disparage battle arrays or archery. One should say: 'The kṣatriya lineage is a superior caste; the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha is always born into two lineages; all those who have gone forth, between the two wheels of Dharma and power, rely on the protection of the wheel of power, thereby being enabled to dwell in peace.' Furthermore, one must not scrutinize another's appearance and say they have much arrogance and will be born in lower destinies, down to the hell of fowls and dogs, and so forth. If one wishes to discuss something, one should say it and then leave. If a layperson says, 'Pay homage to the stūpa for me,' reply: 'If I remember, I will pay homage'; the same applies to paying homage to elder bhikṣus. If receiving an invitation, one should say: 'If there are no obstacles, I will come.' If entering the wealthy houses of kulapatis, one must not say: 'You sit in your shop, using light scales and small bushels to deceive people.' One should say: 'As the Bhagavat said, between the two wheels, only after obtaining the wheel of food can one turn the wheel of the Dharma; for you kulapatis to supply clothing and food is a difficult thing; relying on you, I cultivate pure conduct in the Tathāgata's Dharma and cross the flow of birth and death; this is entirely the grace of your faithful mind.' If entering an assembly of tīrthikas, one must not revile their appearance, saying they have wrong views and lack shame, or speak of their faults and evils. One should praise their actual accomplishments, saying: 'That you are able to go forth and untie bonds, casting off secular dress to quiet the mind in leisure and solitude, is an exceedingly difficult thing.'
