《地持》云：若見眾生，當即慰問；舒顏先語，平視和色，正念在前，問言：道路清泰，四大調適，臥覺安樂？歎言善來。又隨世間巧便語言，呪願妻子眷屬，錢財穀米，增長具足；見功德者，歎施戒等。《四分》：若白衣病，來寺中，應方便喻遣。若稱譽佛法僧者，隨能作為之。若死，為淨伽藍故，自擔棄之。若白衣嚏者，呪願長壽。

The Bodhisattvabhūmi states: If one sees sentient beings, one should promptly console and inquire after them; with a relaxed countenance, speak first, looking levelly with a harmonious expression; with right mindfulness in front, ask: 'Was the road peaceful and serene? Are the four great elements in harmony? Have your sleeping and waking been comfortable and happy?' and praise them, saying, 'Welcome!' Furthermore, following worldly skillful speech, make aspirational blessings for their wives, children, and kin, their money, grain, and wealth to increase and be fully abundant; seeing those of merit, praise their giving, precepts, and so forth. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: If a layperson is sick and comes to the monastery, one should use skillful means to persuade them to leave. If they praise the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṃgha, one may act according to one's capacity for them. If they die, for the sake of keeping the saṅghārāma pure, carry the body away oneself to discard it. If a layperson sneezes, wish them long life with an incantation.
