The Vinayamātṛkā: When a bhikṣu wishes to travel, he first sweeps clean the inside of his room; his clothing, bedding, and mats are arranged according to the Dharma, as detailed in the chapter 'According to the Manifestations'. When leaving, he informs his upādhyāya and ācārya. If he has passed ten rains and there is a matter of the Dharma that will surely bring benefit, even if his master does not permit it, going of his own accord is without fault. When leaving, once he steps outside the monastery and faces the direction of his destination, he should consider: What are his traveling companions like? Do they have right view? Can they care for one another if someone falls ill? Do they act in harmony with my own mind? Do they constantly restrain their deportment? Are they free from indolence? Will this bring benefit or decline? Only if they are certainly good should they go together. He then asks the companions: 'Have you forgotten any of your robes, bowls, or any of your personal belongings?' He also admonishes them: 'Now that we are to travel together, speak only at the proper time and say little, restraining your sense faculties; wherever people see us along the road, cause them all to rejoice and give rise to virtuous minds.' The junior monks all join palms and kneel on one knee, replying: 'We shall gladly practice as taught!' If they make a stop, when departing, the sthavira should inspect all around to see whether any belongings have been left behind. The junior monks should always be in front, and the sthavira behind; he tells the junior monks, 'Each of you restrain your minds, and do not let them become scattered.' If a junior monk falls ill, the sthavira should preach the Dharma for him, so that his virtuous mind continues unbroken. Even in times of urgency and difficulty, he must not abandon him and leave, but exhaust all his physical strength to bring about his rescue; even if his own strength is insufficient, he should go to the local authorities, to monks respected by dānapatis, or to the gates of ministers and the king to make arrangements, so that he may attain release and not suffer. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: When walking, first place the heel down, and then place the toes down. When traveling on the road and wishing to spend the night, send two younger bhikṣus ahead to look for lodging and to seek the morning meal and midday meal; they must announce entering the village at an improper time; having obtained [lodging and food], they return to report, and they should notify one another in turn before entering. The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra: In entering and exiting, coming and going, be calm and single-minded; lifting and placing the feet, walk watching the ground; this is to avoid a scattered mind and to protect living beings. This is the mark of a non-retrogressing bodhisattva.
