Second, explaining the method of the four modes of deportment. Now, the perfection of goodness has its source: it relies on the formal aspects of the teachings to evoke the mind; unseen causes yield visible fruits, leaning on deportment and form to establish the principle. Thus Aśvajit and Śāriputra are fully chronicled in the ancient scriptures; models for transmitting the Dharma are likewise written in the canonical texts. Therefore, I directly relate their unified purpose, separately citing various treatises and the like. The Pañcavargika Vinaya: If the four modes of deportment are not in accordance with the Dharma, one does not make a great illumination for the world. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: When walking, look straight ahead; when turning around, turn with the whole body. The Madhyama Āgama: The Buddha told the bhikṣus: Follow the example of the lion king. At dawn, put on the robes, hold the bowl, and enter the village to beg for food, skillfully protecting the body and restraining all sense faculties. Having begged for food, put away the robes and bowl, wash hands and feet, place the niṣīdāna upon the shoulder, go to a quiet place, and either practice walking meditation or sit in meditation. Again, in the first watch of the night, practice walking meditation and sit in meditation, purifying the inner obstacles of the mind. In the middle watch of the night, enter the room wishing to lie down; fold the uttarāsaṅga fourfold, spread it on the bed, fold the saṃghāṭī into a pillow, and lie on the right side; with head facing toward the Buddha image, resting foot upon foot, keeping the mind focused on the perception of light. In the final watch of the night, rise quickly, just as in the method for the first watch of the night. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: Direct the head toward the robe rack, the upādhyāya, and senior bhikṣus. In the first watch of the night, reflect upon one's own actions. In the middle watch of the night, place the right side down, resting both feet together, close the mouth, press the tongue against the upper palate, pillow the right hand, stretch the left hand along the body; not relinquishing mindfulness and discernment, maintain the intention to rise. The rest is as above. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya: One must not lie down in lamplight.
