《善見》云：若師猶在，應聽律藏及廣義疏；年別應受，非一過也；諷誦通利，是名律師恭敬於律。《佛藏》：五夏已前，依人受學律藏；五夏已後，具知應學無我人法。《善見》：云何學律，謂讀誦解義也。

The *Samantapāsādikā* says: If the teacher is still present, one should listen to the Vinaya Piṭaka and its broad commentaries; one should receive them yearly, not just on a single occasion; chanting with fluency and comprehension—this is called a Vinaya master being respectful toward the Vinaya. The *Buddhapiṭaka-sūtra* says: Before five rains retreats, one relies on others to receive and study the Vinaya Piṭaka; after five rains retreats, knowing them completely, one should study the Dharma of selflessness and personlessness. The *Samantapāsādikā* says: What does studying the Vinaya mean? It means reading, reciting, and understanding the meaning.
