Seventh, the rules for defecation and urination. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: One should not hold back feces and urine for long. When going, hold the privy grass. If many people gather at the privy, it is permissible to defer to those ahead. Arriving outside the privy, snap one's fingers or clear one's throat to make humans and non-humans aware. Place one's robes on a peg or on stones or grass. If soaked by wind and rain, one should wear the robes and hold them firmly with the hand so that they do not touch both sides of the privy. Place the feet firmly, raise the robes gradually, and squat down gradually; do not shift forward or backward to get close to the sides; ensure that feces, urine, snot, and spit fall into the privy hole. The rest is as in the standard rules. Having finished, one should wash off the filth in a separate place, leaving behind residual water, without making noise; wipe with a rag; if the hands smell, use earth, ashes, mud, cow dung, stone rubbing, brick rubbing, or bathing powder, washing with each one. One must not receive instructions, recite scriptures, or make robes beside the privy, hindering other bhikṣus; if one sees excrement scattered, one should remove it.
