Tenth, miscellaneous rules on treating illnesses. The Samantapāsādikā states: Acting as a physician incurs a duṣkṛta. Compounding medicine for the five monastic assemblies is permissible. If the parents of one's upādhyāya are ill in the monastery, disciples are also permitted to compound medicine for them. Furthermore, if parents are poor and lowly and are provided for inside the monastery, or for kappiyakārakas, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, maternal aunts, and maternal uncles, for all of them one is permitted to compound medicine; if they lack [ingredients] and one possesses them oneself, it is also permissible to lend them; if they do not repay, do not demand it. This applies up to seven generations. The Five Hundred Questions states: If a religious person acts as a physician and treats illness out of a compassionate mind, he may do so, but he must not accept goods for himself; if the other person insists on giving, he should accept them for the sake of merit. When ill, one must not practice breath-ingestion or spit upon swellings, as this is the same as the tīrthikas.
