The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: One may learn spells for worm diseases in the belly, or for treating indigestion of overnight food, or learn spells against poison, and so forth; this is for self-protection, not for making a livelihood. For those suffering from vomiting, burn human hair to powder, mix it with water, strain it, and ingest it. For those suffering from heat, smear with sandalwood; aloeswood is also good. For those suffering from poison, ingest rotten medicine; if it has already fallen to the ground, mix it with water, strain it, formally receive it, and ingest it; if it has not yet fallen to the ground, contain it in a vessel, mix it with water, strain it, and ingest it without needing to formally receive it. Mud from the field also needs to be mixed with water, formally received, and ingested. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: Place costus root in the robes to ward off insects. When reciting incantations, do not eat salt and do not sleep on a bed; the Buddha's allowance for divine incantations is thus. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: For the eruption of boils and carbuncles, grind wheat and smear it on them. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: Impure fat and salt may be ingested. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: Impure ghee may be used to pour into the nose.
