《毘尼母》：沙彌法，應知慚愧，善住。奉事師法中，不應懈怠放恣。當自慎身口，卑己敬人；常樂持戒，莫樂調戲；不應自恃才力，復莫輕躁；應知羞耻，不說無定亂言；唯庠序合理，自知淨不淨法。常逐二師，讀誦經法。一切僧中，若有所作，皆不得違。如是廣知。

The *Vinayamātṛkā* states: According to the rules for a śrāmaṇera, he should know shame and conscience and abide well. In serving his teachers, he should not be negligent or dissolute. He should guard his body and speech, humble himself and respect others; always delight in keeping the precepts and never delight in teasing or jesting; he should not rely arrogantly on his talents and strength, nor should he be frivolous or rash; he should know shame, and not utter unfixed, disorderly words; he should only be dignified and conform to reason, naturally knowing pure and impure dharmas. He should always follow his two teachers, reading and reciting the sūtras and teachings. In all matters within the saṃgha, if there is work to be done, he may never shirk it. Know such matters extensively.
